Violet’s life, before the events of the series, was full of pain and suffering, and she also carried out many barbarous and savage acts. Violet is particularly determined to understand the last words uttered to her by the Major: “I love you.” We follow Violet as she tries to find out what happened to him, and also see how, during her employment, she begins to develop empathy and make sense of her own emotions. After losing both her arms in one especially brutal engagement, Violet was discharged from the army, while Gilbert disappeared completely. In turn, he was wracked by guilt for the way she was being used, but also developed not-entirely-appropriate feelings of his own for the young girl. Brutalized and desensitized by her experiences, and with her personality almost completely undeveloped, Violet became extremely attached to her commanding officer, Major Gilbert. She’s a former child soldier who, due to her preternatural fighting abilities, became a key part of Leidenschaftlich’s military strategy. Violet’s backstory is revealed to us through flashbacks over the course of the series. The events of the series take place shortly after a bloody and destructive war, and as such there’s no shortage of people damaged or traumatized by recent events – not least Violet herself. In essence, this means Violet works as a professional writer, and she travels around the country to write on behalf of people who, whether from illiteracy or some other reason, need help in setting down on paper their thoughts and emotions. Set in the fictional realm of Leidenschaftlich (imagine something like 1920s Switzerland), Violet Evergarden charts the progress of our eponymous heroine during her employment for the Postal Service as an “Auto Memory Doll”. Violet Evergarden is an anime series based on a Japanese light novel of the same name.
